World Heritage

World heritages are sites and places that we inherit from the past and pass on to the generations of the entire world. Bangladesh is blessed with a number of such heritage sites. The Shat Gambuj Mosque in Bagerhat and the Somapura Mahavihara in Naogaon are two most important of them. The Statue of Liberty in the USA and Lake Baikal of Russia are examples of greatest heritage sites around the world. The Shat Gambuj Mosque was built in Bagerhat by a Turkish saint Ulugh Khan Jahan Ali in the mid 15th century. The UNESCO declared it a world heritage in 1985. The recognition came for its architectural beauty. It is a wonder of architecture having 77 domes. The Somapura Mahavihara is a lofty ruin of an ancient Buddhist temple. It was built by the Pala king Dharmapala in the 8th century. It is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in ancient Bengal as well as south Asia. The Statue of Liberty is a monument that France gave to the United States to commemorate it hundredth Independence Day in 1886. It was designed by famous French sculptor Fredrick Bartholdi. The statue symbolizes liberty in the form of a huge woman upholding a torch. Lake Baikal, one of the biggest and oldest lakes in central Asia, is a natural phenomenon. It covers an area of 31,500 square kilometers. It is 636 kilometers long and 48 kilometers wide on an average. It contains one-fifth of the world’s reserve of fresh surface water. All these are wonders which will continue to surprise and inspire mankind so long as they exist.
